If you're an El Monte single-family homeowner, the City already includes bulky-item pickup in your trash service through its contractor, Valley Vista Services. Most residents don't realize how generous the program actually is — or where its limits are, which is exactly where a paid hauler like us fits in.
How the program works
El Monte single-family residents get 20 free bulky-item pickups per year. You call Valley Vista directly at 800-442-6454 to schedule, and items are collected on your regular trash day — not a separate special trip. That means the timing depends on where your address falls in the weekly collection schedule.
What Valley Vista takes
The program is built around standard household bulky items: furniture, mattresses, appliances, and similar residential items that are too large for your regular bin. Items need to be set out at the curb on your scheduled day, the same way your regular trash and recycling would be.
What Valley Vista won't take
This is the part that sends most people looking for a paid hauler. Valley Vista's free program does not cover construction debris, business or commercial waste, or hazardous materials. If your cleanout includes any of those categories — a renovation's worth of drywall and lumber, a business decommission, or paint and solvents — the free program isn't built for it.
If everything you need gone is residential furniture, appliances, or household items, and you can wait for your scheduled trash day, Valley Vista is the free, effective option. If any part of the load is commercial, construction-related, or hazardous — or you can't wait — that's when a paid hauler makes sense.
Scheduling steps
- Call Valley Vista Services at 800-442-6454 to request a bulky-item pickup.
- Confirm your scheduled trash day, since pickup happens on that day rather than a separate visit.
- Set items at the curb the night before or morning of your collection day.
- Track how many of your 20 annual pickups you've used, since the count resets yearly.
When a paid hauler is the smarter call
Most of our residential calls in El Monte fall into one of these buckets:
- You've used your 20 pickups already and need more this year
- You can't wait for your next scheduled trash day (move-outs, estate sales, time-sensitive cleanouts)
- The items don't qualify — construction debris, business waste, or hazardous materials
- You can't or don't want to move heavy items to the curb yourself

Not sure which option fits your cleanout?
Call or text (626) 605-3596 and describe what you've got. We'll point you to Valley Vista if that's the better call, or quote you on the spot if it's not.
Frequent questions
Does South El Monte have the same program?
No. South El Monte is a separate city with its own contractor, Athens Services, which offers three free bulky pickups per year instead of 20 — a different cap and schedule. See our Athens Services guide for the details.
What about Avocado Heights?
Avocado Heights is unincorporated LA County with no municipal bulky-item program at all, so a paid hauler is the standard option there for residential and equestrian-property cleanouts.
Can I use my 20 pickups for a business?
No — the program is for single-family residential waste only. Business and commercial waste isn't covered even if it's generated at a home address.
Is there a fee if items don't qualify and get left behind?
Valley Vista will simply leave items that don't meet program rules. If that happens, we're a same-day or next-day option to clear it.
